Braces fix bad bites and malocclusions, crooked or crowded teeth, by applying pressure on each tooth to put them into their proper bracesposition. Earlier treatment has its perks, but adults can use braces as well.

Earlier Treatment:

Dental issues mentioned above usually begin at 6 and 12 years of age, but orthodontic treatment usually begins around 8 to 14 years of age, because children's bone structure is still developing.

The exact duration of treatment varies from one person to another but may last up to 3 years. The braces move your child's teeth into their proper positions and, after your child no longer needs to wear braces, they will need to wear a retainer so their teeth don't shift back into their crooked positions.

Adult Treatment:

Your Northwest Houston dentist can treat adults as well. No one is too old for braces. They work the same as for children. Braces add light pressure to teeth to move them into their proper position. There is a bigger risk of gum disease in adults though, so visit your doctor on a regular basis.

To ensure your treatment gives you optimal solutions, make sure to wear a mouth guard if you're playing a sport, don't skip your dentist's appointment to ensure braces are adjusted properly and that there's no hardened plaque on teeth and/or around gums.

Also, try avoiding certain foods, such as popcorn, corn, or sticky foods, floss and brush your teeth after every meal, and make sure you change your toothbrush every three months or when bristles are frayed.

After treatment, wearing a retainer will help maintain the position of your teeth. You should continue brushing and flossing, but consider fluoride-containing products, like mouthwash, toothpaste and drinking water, and visit your doctor for professional cleanings.

Are your teeth crooked? Braces offer an effective way to improve your smile and your oral health. Our Northwest Houston, TX, dentist, Dr. bracesBrent Browning, explains how you can benefit from orthodontic treatment and discusses several popular types of braces.

How can braces help my smile?

Braces improve the alignment of your teeth, eliminating bite problems and improving your appearance. No matter what type of braces you choose, the fundamentals are the same. Braces exert constant, gentle pressure on your teeth, which helps move them into the proper position.

Orthodontic treatment improves the way your teeth look but also corrects bite problems that can cause jaw pain, temporomandibular joint disorder, headaches, chewing problems and abnormal wear on your teeth. They're also effective in relieving crowding and closing gaps between teeth.

What types of braces are available?

Depending on the severity of your orthodontic issue and your preferences, one or more of these types of braces may be recommended:

  • Metal Braces: This time-tested option is very effective in correcting alignment issues. The position of your teeth changes when wires threaded through metal brackets are adjusted at regular intervals. Although metal braces do an excellent job of correcting mild to severe orthodontic problems, some people find them unattractive.
  • Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces use clear or tooth-colored brackets paired with metal or clear wires. Ceramic braces are less obvious but not quite as durable as metal braces.
  • Clear Braces: Clear braces have become a popular choice in Northwest Houston in recent years. They use a series of clear, removable aligner trays that fit over the top and bottom teeth. Each set of trays in the series is worn for two weeks before being replaced with a new set. Clear braces are removed for eating and oral hygiene and can even be taken out occasionally for special events. They're very effective in treating mild to moderate orthodontic issues, but aren't a good choice if you have a more complicated problem.

It doesn't take too long to get used to having braces once they're put on, but caring for your teeth properly can be a challenge with the orthodonticsnew "roadblocks" in the way. The crevices between the brackets and wires create more spaces for plaque to collect and go unnoticed, so caring for your teeth while wearing braces is of the utmost importance to ensure that they're healthy once your braces come off. Dr. Brent Browning, your dentist in Northwest Houston, TX, has provided some information about how you can continue maintaining your dental hygiene even while you have braces on your teeth.

Brushing

Brushing twice a day is an important habit to maintain without braces, but your Northwest Houston dentist encourages his patients with braces to make brushing a priority by carrying a travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you in a purse or backpack. The process of brushing doesn't change much with braces: you still need to brush for at least two minutes at a time using a soft-bristled brush. However, if it's possible, you should try to brush after each meal using a fluoride toothpaste to help fight plaque buildup. You can also ask your dentist about recommendations for an orthodontic toothbrush that is designed to clean between the hardware.

Flossing

Keeping the spaces between your teeth free of debris is best achieved with floss, since even the most sophisticated toothbrush can't reach the tight areas where the teeth touch each other. The process of flossing can be difficult to master even if you don't have wires in the way. Those with braces should use a floss threader, a flexible plastic attachment that helps make flossing more streamlined.

As always, seeing your Northwest Houston, TX dentist twice a year for cleaning is necessary for good dental hygiene. During your appointments, Dr. Browning can demonstrate the best cleaning practices while wearing braces. Contact us today for any questions or to make an appointment!

Many of our Houston, TX patients know the basics of braces: they’re made of metal and they’ll straighten your teeth. While these statements are definitely true, there’s certainly a lot more that goes into applying and maintaining braces. Dr. Brent Browning of bracesBrowning Smile Design has some of the questions his patients most commonly ask when considering braces.

How long do I have to wear braces?

The length of time a person wears braces really depends upon what’s being corrected. For example, some patients have minor adjustments that braces can guide to a better smile. Others require more significant alignment and bite corrections. On average, patients wear braces between 18 to 24 months.

What’s the right age to have braces put on?

Dr. Browning typically recommends his Houston, TX braces patients start wearing braces anywhere from age eight to 14. The best timing is when the facial bones may still be growing because the braces may be more effective in correcting certain bite misalignments.

One of the ways to anticipate if a child may need braces to correct the teeth is to schedule an orthodontic appointment at age 7. At this time, a child has a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth. This gives a pretty good clue if the braces will be successful.

Will braces hurt?

The purpose of braces is to re-direct a patient’s teeth to correct crooked, irregularly spaced, or crowded teeth. The process for making this happen can cause some discomfort and soreness, but this is not typically to the point of causing significant pain. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help reduce pain. The discomfort typically lasts up to three days after braces are applied or adjusted.

Can adults wear braces?

Yes, adults can definitely wear braces. Dr. Browning encourages his patients to get braces at younger ages because the patient is still growing. While some limitations exist as to how well braces can work for an adult, they can certainly correct alignment, crowding, and bite concerns. The best way to find out if they can help you is to make a braces consultation appointment with Dr. Brent Browning at Browning Smile Design in Houston, TX. Call today to get a straighter smile.

For people with misaligned or crooked teeth that taint their smile, finding the dental solution to get everything straightened out in their mouths often comes down to this: braces or Invisalign?

Though both have been proven to provide a lasting solution for a straighter smile, they have their own sets of advantages and Bracesdisadvantages. But at Browning Smile Design, you'll find the most important factors you need to make the final decision, as Brent R. Browning, D.D.S., brings life to each and every smile that enters his office.

Take a look at the advantages of braces below, followed by what makes Invisalign a winning dental option as well:

Braces

  • correct poorly aligned jaws and bad bites
  • straighten crooked, crowded, or missing teeth
  • especially great for young children between the ages of 7 and 14, because their facial structures are still forming

Benefits of conventional braces:

  • trusted way to straighten teeth for decades
  • durable and long-lasting
  • more comfortable today than in years past

Invisalign

  • use a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth
  • each set of aligners is used for about two weeks, slowly adjusting your teeth to their desired position
  • About 18-30 aligners are used for each treatment, lasting between 9-15 months

Benefits of Invisalign:

  • made using state-of-the-art 3D computer imaging technology
